DirectTV is the largest DBS satellite provider. But Cable TV is the superior product! Rupert Murdoch called DirectTV a “turd bird” and he is majority owner of DirectTV and also News Corp. A satellite in orbit is typically called a “Bird” hence Rupert Murdoch’s term “turd bird”. Why would the owner of DirectTV be undermining his own company?

Perhaps out of frustration! As reported in Variety Business, and also confirmed by CNBC, Murdoch is considering selling 38% of his controlling stake of DirectTV to Liberty Media. According to Variety Business, Murdoch’s has been down on the satellite business lately. Mostly because there’s no way satellite can successfully compete with the Cable industry. Cable TV Operators continue to roll out what’s called “Triple Play” which consists of Cable TV video channels, high-speed internet {Cable internet}, and Cable telephone services that DirectTV and Dish Network cant match.

We can understand and sympathize with Mr. Murdoch, DirectTV cannot and will never be able to match up to the huge advantages Digital Cable TV has to offer. When DirecTV started in 1994 they were the first satellite TV provider to offer programming from one 18” dish, times have changed. The dishes have gotten bigger and in some areas multiple dishes are needed just to provide local channels! It actually seems like DirectTV has taken a few steps back in technology since their beginning in 1994?

DirecTV – A Cable TV Wannabe

A short history of DirectTV, in December 1993 Hughes Electronics launched their first satellite for two programming services USSB and DirectTV. In 1994 it became available to the public as an alternative to Cable TV. DirectTV service is nice as long as there’s no rain, no clouds, no ice, no snow, no trees, no wind, umm anyways you get the idea, its no where near as reliable as Cable TV! While DirecTV was still trying to provide cable channels, the Cable industry in the U.S. alone has spent $100 billion over ten years to build a two-way interactive network with fiber optic technology.

I would be very frustrated myself if I were the owner of DirectTV or Dish Network. There is no way to compete with the reliability of Cable TV, along with high-speed internet {Cable internet}, Cable telephone service, true Video on Demand {VOD}, and all these services provided with one tiny cable! I’ll always think fondly of DirectTV as the “turd bird”.
