Steroid abuse in lateral sense is the foul or wrong usage of steroids, which is absolutely pernicious. Steroids are often abused by bodybuilders/sports persons/athletes to get an edge over rivals. Steroid abuse in sports is utterly illegal and unethical.   

Steroid abuse is known as doping in sports terminology. The doping of steroids- anabolic steroids is strictly prohibited. However, anabolic steroids are often abused by sports persons in many different kinds of professional sports including cricket, track and field, weightlifting, bodybuilding, shot put, cycling, baseball, wrestling, mixed martial arts, boxing, football, etc. The sports persons mainly abuse steroids to attain a competitive edge or to assist in recovery from injury. Steroids abuse to obtain competitive advantage is prohibited by the rules of the governing bodies of many sports.

The International Amateur Athletic Federation, now the International Association of Athletics Federations, was the first international governing body of sport to take the situation seriously. The association banned steroid abuse in 1928. FIFA, Union Cycliste Internationale (cycling), and International Olympic Committee banned the steroid abuse in 1966-67. Still there are a number of instances of steroid abuse in international sports arenas. 

The Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson's victory in the 100 m at the 1988 Summer Olympics is one of the most famous steroid abuse cases in the recent sports history. 
Ben Johnson was stripped off his gold title when stanozolol (anabolic steroid) was found in his urine. Later, the Canadian sprinter admitted to using the steroid as well as Dianabol, Cypionate, Furazabol, and human growth hormone. Carl Lewis was then promoted to the gold title. Like there were several other steroid abuse cases that led to the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency in 1999 to sternly deal with steroid abuse in sports. The agency is operating finely in all major international sporting events however steroid abuse is still going on at lower levels.

Anabolic steroid abuse is going on among the adolescents participating in sports at lower levels. According to surveys, steroid abuse among High school students in the United States may be as high as 2.7%. 
The young sports persons abuse steroid more often that others. More male students indulge in steroid abuse that the female students. It is extremely difficult to determine the percentage of population that indulges in steroid abuse. It has been revealed thru various surveys that steroids abuse mostly occur among males between the ages 15-25 and noncompetitive bodybuilders and non-athletes who use for cosmetic reasons.
