Steroids are the synthetic hormones derived from testosterone, the hormone responsible for growth and maturity. Steroids that have anabolic and androgenic properties are known as anabolic steroids. Medically, anabolic steroids are often used to treat the conditions that occur due to abnormally low amounts of testosterone production in the body; some of the conditions include delayed puberty and some types of impotence. Anabolic steroids are also used treat uncontrolled weight loss in wasting diseases, such as AIDS and other diseases that result in loss of lean muscle mass.

Anabolic steroids work as great dietary supplements during old age.
