Building your own web site may seem like a daunting prospect to begin with and to be completely honest with you it is a big job but there are several things that you can do to make the whole process easier for yourself.

Starting at the beginning, the first part of building your site has nothing to do with your pc. Grab a pad of that old fashioned paper and pen and start brainstorming exactly what you want your site to be.

At this stage we are not concerned with the look so much as the content.

What’s it going to be called? (It’s important to make this decision early on and to stick to it)

What topics do you want to cover?

Can you do it all on one page or do you need to have several?

What use do you want people to get from your site i.e. Is it a) purely reference or b) mainly for sales?

Are you going to be linking to a lot of external sites or do you wish to remain self contained?

The appearance of your site will include things like:

How do you want the information to be displayed?

What colors of font and background you want.

Whether you want the site to be full screen or running down the middle.

Where and how you want your menu displayed.

It’s best to get all of this down on paper first as you can really get a good brainstorming session going and even sketch out a few ideas and get a feel for what you really want.

Keep it simple to begin with. There will be a lot of complications that arise and once you have mastered those you will then be able to go on and make any changes that you want.

Do some research too. Once you’ve got your basic idea down on paper there is nothing stopping you from going online and visiting a few sited in your field. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on what the competition are doing. This doesn’t mean that you go and steal their ideas but have a look and see what works and what doesn’t and compare that to what you have planned. Is your idea better? If not what can you incorporate to help you improve it?
