The seven-fold four-in-hand necktie is the expensive necktie construction ever known. Being very complicated and expensive it was almost forgotten, but came again after the strict economy policy after the Great Depression. These ties come with particular designer labels, but the selling price starts from a minimum of $160 USD.

The seven-fold necktie construction method shows us the procedure when it was created in the beginning. There were no liner materials like wool, cotton or canvas and the quantity of the silk used was also very small. The construction method seems to be very simple however it requires near an hour to produce one.

But comparing with typical departmental store ties they can produce one tie with in 20 to 25 minutes. The method consists of a square shaped silk folded to seven sections of silk in between the folds. It is necessary to stitch the edges of the cloth to avoid from fraying. A long thick wire of silk or twine is used for fastening the folds. As a resultant product from this procedure will be a remarkable necktie.

The seven-fold tie is guaranteed for its durability and also for its luxury. The tie’s weight and body is derived from the silk layer. This gives the necktie a distinguishable dimple, which formed just below the knot when certain method of neck tying was used. These seven folds are reconstructable. Many times we may notice that the common ties produce wrinkles if its knot is left tied for a longer day, but when considering seven-fold four-in-hand necktie this will not happen.

Many designers showed interest in producing a hybrid namesake necktie with same beauty as that of this seven-fold, but none came in practical. Those produced also contain liners of any material with a low percent of silk and also there will be series of folds visible at the bottom of the tie. However this can be avoided by careful observation about the thickness at mid-tie exposes at the end of folds. But in function these faux seven-fold neckties will not act as that of the true seven-fold four in hand neckties.
As though they have constructed like the same high-quality silk they knot like regular lined ties only so they are called “double four folds”.

Usually the seven fold necktie can be identified by the missing of the secondary material other than silk is visible in between the layers or a change in consistency for the whole length of the tie. In these necktie’s back side we can see the fabric’s inverse woven pattern.
