I recently stayed as a guest of a dear friend at the Dar Iman just outside Marrakech. It was an amazing 4 day Morocco trip, and not just a nice place to stay in Morocco, the Dar Iman was fantastic, and Marrakech every bit as fascinating as I thought it would be.

We were a party of 20, and our very generous host had taken the whole property over for his guests for his wife's 40th birthday, from Thursday to Monday at the end of January.

A group of friends together is probably the only way to get the full benefit of the Dar Iman, which is very well staffed, and so there is the total house party atmosphere where you can let your hair down, and nobody worries.

Our room was simple, very comfortable, with small ensuite, all more than adequate for a long weekend. The living areas were vast, very comfortable with an enormous terrace looking out onto a large lawn, and a big swimming pool which was freezing. It may be north Africa, but it is winter with very cool evenings, cold nights, and only hot when the sun shines.

The whole place is totally private, and so much so, you'd never find it on your own.

It is literally down a very bumpy dirt track about twenty minutes from the town centre, and it was very necessary to have the minibus and drivers laid on for our entire stay. You couldn't get in and out of Marrakech without some form of chauffered transport.

The whole weekend was beautifully managed, with a birthday banquet preceded by folk entertainment, with tribesmen on horseback with muskets in the garden, and a fireater.

Then the courtyard had been transformed into the Medina with acrobats, storytellers, dentists, henna ladies, fortune tellers, snake charmers, you name it and it was there - just fantastic.

The banquet was totally Moroccan, and the whole thing had the backdrop of the magnificent Dar Iman.

Highly recommended.
