You may wonder why they can be found especially in Brazil. The fact is that there are also many to be found in Portugal and it wouldn't be surprising that you can also find some in some other countries, especially in Africa. What do all these countries have in common?... Exactly, they all are portuguese speaking countries. The word pousada means nothing more than a family run hotel,.... you can also call it a house hotel, or if I am not mistaken, the english word is "inn".

A building too big to be a normal house, or you can say it used to be a really big house, and at the same time,.. too small to be a hotel building. That is what you need to have a pousada. Generally a family runs it, though this does not always mean this family owns the pousada. In some cases a pousada is a bunch of very small houses on a piece of land. Small houses means: So small you can't live in it. Its more like a bungalow tent or a permanent caravan made of stone. But for vacation purposes one of the best ways to spend your free time.

Talking about bungalow tents and permanent caravans (note, these are a lot smaller than a trailer),... The advantage of a pousada is that you can go to another one every weekend. There´s not obligation to every weekend go to the same old location where you know all your neighbor because they too never go anywhere else. I guess many people like "same old, same old" more than "something new"

Beaches, if you love the beach, then a pousada at the beach is great. And this may be surprising, there is no such thing as a private beach in Brazil, so you never have to worry about only being able to look at the beach. All beaches are accessable for everybody. That doesn't mean all beaches are reachable though. But you can be sure that close to those beaches, you won't find many pousadas.

Waterfalls,.. Some pousadas are placed close to waterfalls. And waterfalls can be found by the hundreds in Brazil. For example the island in front of the coast of the state of São Paulo, named Ilhabella (beautiful island) is maybe 30 by 40 miles big, but you can find over 300 waterfalls on this small island. It is over 2000 feet high so it is not strange that there are some waterfalls of upto 250 feet high.

The Pantanal is a famous area in Brazil of which you can find a lot more information by searching in Google. It´s too much to write about in detail in this article. But if you like the outdoor life, you should consider visiting this part of Brazil. Featured in programs on various channels like the Discovery Channel, the pantanal has many pousadas as home bases to discover the wild life in the Pantanal.

Pousadas are the best places to stay when visiting Brazil, but it is not recommendable to go to these places without knowing the country. English is not commonly spoken, so you either need to speak (brazilian) portuguese or have a trustable guide to help you find your way.
